Sugar Intolerance Information

A sugar intolerance is a situation where a person cannot properly digest sugar. Eating certain foods that contain sugar can cause people with a sugar intolerance to experience a number of negative symptoms.

In some cases, the symptoms can be a response to a fructose intolerance, but they can also be an intolerance to other types of sugar as well.

As with all food intolerances, these symptoms are often delayed. A person may not feel any issues for hours or even days after eating sugar. This is different from an allergy where the reaction would typically be more immediate.

What is a Sugar Intolerance?



A person who has a sugar intolerance has difficulty properly absorbing and metabolizing the correct amount of fructose or other sugars from food. Eating certain foods can cause people who have a sugar intolerance to experience a number of gastrointestinal issues as well as other issues.

Symptoms Of Sugar Intolerance



Sugar intolerance symptoms include bloating, diarrhea, constipation, excessive gas, stomach pain, stomach spasms, vomiting and other issues. These symptoms vary between individuals. Some people may experience more severe symptoms while others will encounter noticeable yet less intense symptoms. In some cases the severity of the sugar intolerance symptoms depends on the quantity of sugar consumed. Different people react differently to certain foods.

The associated symptoms are delayed. They sometimes appear hours after consuming a problem food while in some cases a person with a sugar intolerance can experience negative symptoms days after eating the food in question. This can make diagnosing the issue difficult for many people.

Sugar Intolerance Treatment



There is no cure for a sugar intolerance, however eating an appropriate diet will help. Depending on the type of intolerance and the types of sugar that cause negative symptoms, eliminating foods that contain fructose, honey, sorbitol or crystalline fructose from one`s diet may be required. Sugar alcohols such as mannitol, xylitol, lactitol, maltitol, isomalt, erythrytol and lactatol may also need to be avoided and, in many cases, high fructose corn syrup should only be consumed sparingly.

Those with a sugar intolerance can consume fruits and vegetables that contain sugar in limited amounts. Remember that each individual has different food intolerances and different reactions and thus treatment is unique for each person.
