Coconut Intolerance Information

When a person has a coconut intolerance, he or she will experience a negative symptom or symptoms after consuming coconuts as well as after consuming products or foods that contain coconut. There is a difference between a coconut allergy and a coconut intolerance that is important to point out. With a coconut allergy, symptoms are immediate and often quite severe. In some cases they can even be life-threatening. Coconut intolerance symptoms are not life-threatening. They can instead make it difficult for a person to comfortably live life without feeling badly.

Another key different between a coconut intolerance and an allergy is the length of time between eating the offending food and experiencing the negative symptoms. As mentioned, with an allergy, the symptoms are immediate or nearly immediate. With a coconut allergy, symptoms are delayed by quite some time. In most cases there is a delay of up to several hours between the time person ingests the offending food and the time that the symptoms appear. However, with some people, the delay can be up to a day or more.

This is just one way that coconut intolerances vary from person to person. A coconut intolerance (like any food intolerance) is very individual and each person will experience the intolerance in a different way.

What is a Coconut Intolerance?



A coconut intolerance is a situation where a person experiences a negative response or feeling after eating coconut. There are two types of food intolerances: digestive intolerances and immune intolerances. With a digestive coconut intolerance, a person is unable to properly digest coconuts or one of the compounds or parts of coconuts. There person may also be unable to properly process, absorb or metabolize coconuts. This is different from an immune intolerance. With an immune intolerance, the body will respond to the offending food with an immune response.

A person with a coconut intolerance will feel unwell or experience negative symptoms after eating coconut. A person may also experience these negative symptoms when eating foods that are related to coconut, such as other palm and betel nuts. Persons who are intolerant to coconuts may also be intolerant to hazelnuts and walnuts as well as tree nuts. However, this depends on the individual. Some people will only have an issue with coconuts themselves while others will feel negative after eating a number of related foods. As mentioned earlier, food intolerances are very individual.

Some people who have a coconut intolerance are able to eat small amounts of coconut or coconut that has prepared in a specific way. Others will experience negative coconut intolerance symptoms after eating even a very small amount.

In addition, certain people will a coconut intolerance will have issues with fructans, fructose, sulphites, salicylates and amines. These are present in coconut that has been prepared in certain ways. For example, coconut oil does not contain frutose or fructans, but all other forms of coconut do. If you have an issue with fructose, you may be able to consume coconut oil without issue while other types of coconut will cause problems.

Coconut milk, coconut cream, coconut oil and dessicated coconut all contain salicylates and amines while dessicated coconut contains sulphites. These particular substances may cause people to experience issues with some coconut products but not with others.

Digestive Coconut Intolerance Symptoms



As mentioned earlier, food intolerance symptoms vary from person to person. This is especially true with immune intolerances. A person with an immune coconut intolerance will experience negative symptoms after eating coconut, but they will vary greatly depending on the person. Immune food intolerance symptoms are known to manifest in a very individual way.

While symptoms also vary with a digestive coconut intolerance, there are some symptoms that many people will experience. Each person will not experience all of these symptoms, however. Common digestive coconut intolerance symptoms include stomach pain, cramping, bloating, leaky gut and other stomach-related symptoms. Not everyone will experience these symptoms with the same severity and the duration will vary as well.

Coconut Intolerance Treatment



Removing the offending foods from your diet will lead to you no longer experiencing negative symptoms. In many cases, this does not have to be a permanent change. Many people are able to resume eating coconut and coconut products at a later date without issue. This should be done on the advice of a medical professional.

In addition, it is important to ask questions when dining out to ensure that you do not consume coconut or coconut products without knowing.
